The Bollywood actor Jagdeep passed away on Wednesday due to age-related health conditions. Classic fans of Hindi cinema will always remember him for playing various roles such as Soorma Bhopali in the bellowed film Sholay, and the timber merchant in the Ramesh Sippy directorial.
Jagdeep had entered the film industry at an early age as a child artiste in various films such as Bimal Roy’s Do Bigha Zamin, and Aar Paar among others. His love for acting only grew for the next six decades of his career. In 1988 Jagdeep took the director’s chair and directed a film about his character Soorma Bhopali in Sholay. He was also the lead actor in this film.
Jagdeep was also seen in other mainstream films such as Feroze Khan’s Qurbani and Amitabh Bachchan’s Shehenshah. In the 90s he showed audiences a new side of himself in the comedy film Andaz Apna where he played Salman Khan’s father. He had also played the character of Bankelal in the Rajkumar Santoshi directorial.
Over his career, Jagdeep appeared in more than 400 movies, and he became well known for his comedic roles. A fact which is not very well known about his career is that he played the lead actor in movies including Bhabhi, Barkha, and Bindaya among others. He also appeared in some cult horror movies such as Purana Mandir and 3D Saamri.
Jagdeep had 6 children from 3 marriages to Naseem Begum, Sughra Begum, and Nazima. Of them, his two sons Jaaved Jaaferi and Naved Jafri are also quite famous in the film and television industry. Jaaved and Naved have both hosted the popular dance show called Boogie Woogie. Jagdeep’s grandson Meezan made his Bollywood debut in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali production Malaal.
Jagdeeps’ family has described him with fond memories in various interviews and various actors have bid the veteran actor farewell on Twitter. His funeral ceremony will take place in a cemetery in South Mumbai on Thursday.
