Corning Introduces Chemical Processing Innovations Designed to Advance the Flow Chemistry Industry
Corning Incorporated today introduced the Corning Lab Reactor System 2 as the latest product line available in its Advanced-Flow™ Reactor (AFR) portfolio at CPHI China. The Lab Reactor System 2 – featuring a Lab Dosing Unit and the choice of a Lab Reactor Unit or Lab Photo Reactor Unit – is designed to help customers develop and process chemicals in a more efficient manner using inherently safer continuous flow technology, while adding new features to make the Lab Reactor System 2 easier for customers to use.

As a compact, plug-and-play unit, the Lab Reactor System 2 enables customers in academic, laboratory, and industrial settings to install this new system in a matter of minutes to begin research and development work utilizing flow chemistry.
Corning’s AFR team leveraged the company’s continuous innovation approach to design the Corning Lab Rector System 2, which features units that provide seamless scale-up capabilities with the existing AFR portfolio. The Lab Rector System 2 includes the:
Lab Reactor Unit – this solution leverages Corning’s glass fluidic modules – featuring the company’s “heart-cell” design – which enables outstanding mixing and heat exchange as well as effective reaction. Additionally, the Lab Reactor Unit features an optional cooling coil that can be used as a thermal quench in chemical reactions to optimize yields and avoid impurities. This unit has a built-in camera to provide a real-time view of the mixing area to help customers efficiently watch, adjust, and process chemicals.
Lab Photo Reactor Unit – this unit is designed to support flow photochemistry applications with integrated, high-intensity LED lighting, efficient light penetration to deliver consistent, uniform reactions, and a broad range of available wavelengths to tune the reactivity of the system.
Lab Dosing Unit – this latest dosing solution enables a consistent and pulseless flow of reactants or starting materials, which is essential for flow chemistry. This unit features real-time graphing, includes an easy-to-use touch screen interface to provide enhanced user experience, and delivers high-chemical durability enabled by metal-free processing to support a broad range of reactions.
“We worked closely with our customers to incorporate updates in the Lab Rector System 2 that help researchers and chemists get their job done more efficiently,” said Olivier Lobet, global product development and engineering manager, Corning Advanced-Flow Reactor Technologies. “This consistent collaboration with innovation-focused customers, both academically and industrially, for the last two decades has enabled Corning’s AFR business to grow and continue to offer its customers a more efficient way to develop flow processes for continuous manufacturing of chemicals using inherently safer technology.”
Corning announced this new system at the annual CPHI China tradeshow in Shanghai June 19-22. The Lab Reactor System 2 as well as other AFR technologies will be on display at booth W5G02.
AFR customers can now place orders for the Lab Reactor System 2 through Corning’s regional sales channels and receive quality after-sale services through Corning’s regional technical and commercial teams around the world.
Corning’s AFR business has more than two decades of experience in continuous flow manufacturing in fine chemical, pharmaceutical, and new materials industries – with more than 800 global equipment installations to date. Compared to traditional batch chemical processing, Corning’s AFR technology is an inherently safer technology that can drive higher-quality chemical processing and a reduced risk of process hazards. Additional benefits include energy savings, increased efficiency of chemical synthesis, lower production costs, and reduced environmental impact.
