Haryana Police In Sonipat District Has Secured The Detention Orders Of A Habitual Offender And Notorious Drug Peddler

Haryana Police secures detention orders of drug peddler under PITNDPS Act

This legislation allows preventive detention for a period of one year without bail

Chandigarh, Oct 9 –  Haryana Police in Sonipat district has secured the detention orders of a habitual offender and notorious drug peddler under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PITNDPS) Act, 1988, a law under which preventive detention for a period of one year without bail is possible.

Sharing the information here today, a Haryana Police spokesperson informed that after 2008, this is the first action in the State against a drug peddler under the stringent Act. A dossier was submitted by the Superintendent of Police, Sh. Himanshu Garg before the Competent Authority in Delhi, who passed the orders to detain accused Rakesh, a resident of village Rohna, police station Kharkhoda, Sonipat in District Jail Sonipat for one year under the PITNDPS Act.

Giving further details, Sh. Himanshu Garg informed that accused Rakesh had been arrested in connection with peddling of more than 137 kg ganja from Odisha in Sonipat district. As per the past criminal history of the accused, he was also found booked in Delhi and Punjab in cases related to drug peddling. In these cases, he was found directly involved in the illegal smuggling of drugs from Odisha.

 

Considering the background of the accused, the police gathered the information and filed a detailed report before the Competent Authority in Delhi seeking permission to book him under PITNDPS Act. The proposal was scrutinised by a Screening Committee headed by DG NCB and comprising of senior officers of the Ministry of Law and Justice, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, CBI and NCB. Based on the facts, the Screening Committee found the proposal fit for issuance of detention orders and recommended the same to the competent authority. Accordingly, the Authority has passed the orders to detain the accused Rakesh in the district jail Sonipat for one year.

 

It may be mentioned here that all the district police chiefs have been directed to book drug peddlers under PITNDPS Act. This process will continue in future also so that this menace is completely uprooted from our society.
