Earthworms have been called the best friends of farmers. This is undeniably as seen in the cases of vermicomposting and vermiwash.
Vermicomposting can be called as a process in which nutrient-rich fertilizer is prepared by the action of earthworms. The species of earthworm like Pheretima posthuma is widely implemented to break down the organic matter.
On the other hand, vermiwash is another source of micronutrients for the crops. Vermiwash is a brown liquid used as an effective fertilizer. It is acquired after passage of water via a worm culture column.
Now, whether we talk about vermicompost or vermiwash, both are low-cost products. Furthermore, vermiwash is believed to nurture many microorganisms that increase the plant yield. Quite closely related, vermicomposting may need a few things such as a container, bedding material, and sufficient moisture content.
However, in both scenarios, it is important to select the best variety of earthworms. They should have a higher survival rate as well as high reproduction rate. The feed of the earthworms should be taken care of. Old cow dung or cow dung mixed with kitchen waste or sewage sludge can also be good alternatives.
Both these methods produce a substantial amount of manure with much lesser efforts. That is why these are being applied exceedingly by the crop owners.
