When Kargil Vijay Diwas is Celebrated?

The Indian Army won the Kargil War, which began on May 3, 1999, and lasted for two months, ending on July 26, 1999. “Operation Vijay,” which was completed by Indian Army on July 26, 1999, was the operation of the Kargil conflict. As a result, the 26th of July has been designated as the Kargil Vijay Diwas and is observed annually in honour of Indian soldiers.

How Kargil Vijay Diwas is Celebrated?

On July 26, in honour of the gallant warriors who made Operation Vijay a success, Indian army officers lit 559 oil lamps as part of Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations. The Indian army organises the ceremony every year at the Kargil War Memorial in the Drass region of Ladakh. The Prime Minister also ignited oil lights at the India Gate in New Delhi to honour the Kargil war heroes and ask all Indians to honour and remember the warriors who gave their lives fighting in Kargil.

Why is Vijay Diwas Celebrated?

The Indian people honour all the soldiers who gave their life in 1999 while defending their nation against Pakistan in Kargil on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas or Kargil Diwas. Both countries agreed that during the winter, when there is a lot of snow melting in the hilly areas, no soldiers would be stationed at the hilltop posts. However, the Pakistani army tricked the Indian army and took over command of crucial sites from within the Indian army by employing snow melting.

The Kargil war, which broke out between the two nations in 1999 as a result, saw the Indian army engage in battle, route the Pakistani army, and retake all of India’s strategic strongholds. The Indian people commemorate Kargil Vijay Diwas on July 26 every year in honour of their heroes ever since the Indian army defeated the Pakistani army on July 26, 1999. The Indian Prime Minister expresses his thanks to all the soldiers who took part in the Kargil battle on July 26 at the Amar Jyoti in New Delhi. As part of the commemoration of Kargil Vijay Diwas on July 26, the Indian Army honours the contributions and dedication of Indian soldiers in the Kargil area.

Significance of Vijay Diwas

The Kargil Bijay Diwas should be observed by every Indian as a tribute to the bravery of our soldiers who gave their lives in battle to defend their nation and defeat enemies. Every year on July 26th, Indians mark this day at the India Gate in New Delhi and in the Kargil region as a means to honour our valiant soldiers. The battle came to a conclusion on July 26, 1999, after two months of fighting, when Indian forces routed Pakistani forces and sent them home. Although more than 500 Indian soldiers lost their lives in the fight, they all sent a strong message to the outside world: despite India’s reputation for peace, the Indian army will never consent to any occupation.

Legend of Kargil Diwas

According to the legend surrounding the Kargil War, both countries, Pakistan and India struck a ceasefire pact to minimize armed confrontations following the Indo-Pak war in 1971. However, the fight for Siachen glaciers and increased militant activities in Kashmir caused the situation to worsen. So, India and Pakistan signed a Lahore Declaration in 1999 to resolve the issue of Kashmir in a peaceful manner. During 1998-1999, both the nations successfully conducted nuclear tests causing the tensions between the two nations again and the Pakistani armed forces started sending their soldiers in order to send back Indian soldiers from the Siachen glaciers and thus wanted to break the connection between Ladakh and Kashmir.

Indian army, on the other hand, could not realize that Pakistani armed forces has captured the elevated key posts and thought it was a terrorist activity that would be solved within a few days. But they finally recognized that the Pakistani army had captured about 120-200 km of areas. Then the Indian Government launched “Operation Vijay” in order to crush the Pakistani army and sent them back from the Indian territory. The Indian army successfully achieved its target on the 26th of July 1999 but lost the lives of more than 500 soldiers in the war. That is why 26th July is remembered as the Kargil Vijay Diwas every year.
