On the 21st of May, Twitter tweeted that any user who would be able to reply to its tweet would then be verified and given the Blue Tick that signifies it. However, they had a condition which unfortunately users were not able to fulfill.
They reportedly tweeted via the Twitter Communications Official Account as “reply if you want to be verified!”.
Unfortunately, this was a test of their latest feature in disguise. The new feature limits the number of users who can partake in a conversation on the microblogging website by allowing the poster of the tweet to control who can reply to it. The feature is currently being tested and is currently only shared by a small percentage of global users.
As per the feature, users will be able to compose a tweet and choose who will be able to reply to it by choosing the options stating “Only People You Mention”, “Everyone”, or “People You Follow”. The default setting for all users will be “Everyone”, and it will allow tweets to function just as they are for now. The “People You Follow” option will allow only people the poster is following to reply to the tweet.
However, many of the twitter users have been calling it an evil act by quoting it in their own tweets. Some users stated that twitter is mocking the helpless creators who struggle to get verified while others call it the “killer feature” for dictators around the world.
