WHO: India has a tremendous capacity to fight against Covid-19

Earlier, India imposed a complete shutdown across 30 states. Now India declared a complete lockdown all over the country, to combat the spread of coronavirus. The World Health Organisation (WHO) says that India has a tremendous capacity to deal the pandemic. It has the experience of eradicating smallpox and polio. 

“There is a need in the number of labs where a surge is seen. India is a very populous country and the future of this virus will be considered in a very highly and densely populated country. India led the world in eradicating two pandemics, small-pox, and polio so India has a tremendous capacity. There are no easy answers. It is exceptionally important that countries like India show the way to the world as they have done before.”- WHO executive director J Ryan said.

Dr. Roderico Ofrin, WHO’s Regional Emergencies Director praised India’s comprehensive and robust response. It is doing a lot to prevent and contain the spread of Covid-19. He said, “Its latest announcements related to quarantine and social distancing measures, including recent lockdown of 75 affected districts, suspension of rail, inter-state bus services and metro services are initiatives of unprecedented scale and reflect the country’s resolve to prevent the spread of the pandemic.” 

As per the WHO, the number of cases worldwide has surpassed 3,30,000 and the deaths have exceeded 14,000. In India, the number of Covid-19 cases has crossed 500. Although the curfew has been imposed and a complete lockdown has been implemented in the country.
