MBBS Course, Admission, Duration, Eligibility, Career, Jobs and Salary

Career in MBBS – The field of medicine is considered a lot more difficult than engineering. This difficulty begins from the time of admission in a Government Medical College and goes up till the stage of doing a job.  The degree MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery) is the primary frontier one must explore in order to become a doctor. This is a combination of two undergraduate degrees taught as one which began in the UK.

In other countries such as the US, the two degrees are conducted separately, however, the bachelor degree everywhere gives students the right to prefix Doctor with their name. This medical undergraduate program takes 5 and a half years to complete and is considered as one of the most demanding courses in India. This is taken up to the next level due to the highly competitive nature of the MBBS Admission Process. The course introduces the students to various fields of medicine such as Anatomy, Cytology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Drugs Formulation and Method of Surgery.

MBBS Course and Duration

The Degree is meant to last five and a half years which involves academic education for four and a half years and one year of mandatory internship. There are several colleges in India and abroad that offer the course of MBBS, which makes it one of the most sought-after courses for science students after 12th.

The primary requirement is that students must pass with Physics, Chemistry and Biology in Class 12th, while eligibility also varies from college to college. After completion of this course, students can officially be called medical doctors, and it teaches them all subjects required to treat patients as a physician and general surgeon. Throughout all five years of the program, students are given hands-on experience in dealing with patients and treating diseases and injuries.

Skills required for an MBBS Career are quite similar to other jobs that involve interacting with other people on a daily basis. Candidates should be able to work in a team, have a deep-rooted interest in helping people, Stamina and Concentration to work, Responsible Attitude, Patience, and Mental Alertness.

MBBS Eligibility and Admission

In order to get admission, one must go through the MBBS Admission Process. The eligibility criteria for this is:

  • Pass Class 12th with minimum 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
  • Be between 17 and 25 years of age.
  • Appear and clear the Medical admission test called NEET (National Eligibility Entrance Test)

After this, depending on your rank in NEET and other specific requirements of a University you may be granted admission in MBBS.

MBBS Career and Jobs

After the completion of your MBBS, the prefix Dr. or Doctor will be added to your name, and you will be able to practice medicine in a clinic or hospital and treat sick patients. Your career profile must have a certain skill set to get a job in a good hospital. These skills include immense knowledge in the field, impeccable diagnosing ability, responsibility, confidence, caring and great communication skills. This will help you succeed as a doctor and will make patients visit you more often than other doctors.

Salary of an MBBS Doctor

The salary of a doctor may vary from 50K INR to 200K depending on the area of expertise. Individual skills and specializations also regulate the salary of a doctor.

This field is one that has a 100% guarantee for a job post completion of the degree. As a matter of fact, there isn’t a single MBBS degree holder in the nation who is without a job (except due to malpractice or other legal reasons). Therefore, when you appear for the MBBS Entrance Exam NEET, you can have full confidence in your career shining brightly in the future.

After graduation, you will have the option to open your own medical clinic/ hospital if you have the capital for it, join a hospital/ clinic for a job or study further to specialize in a certain branch of medicine.
