Now Chemistry will not be Mandatory for Engineering Courses

Chemistry will be optional now for Engineering Courses

Recently the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) made a new rule that Chemistry will not be the mandatory subject for admission into B.Tech and B.E courses. This move will allow thousands of additional students to get admission into the engineering courses. And this will be allowed in colleges all over India.

Along with this, those students will also be eligible to get into the engineering courses from the next academic session, who have completed their higher secondary with Physics and Mathematics along with the additional subject which includes Biology and Biotechnology. Presently for engineering streams, the compulsory subjects are Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

In the technical education regulator, sources said that from the new academic session that is in 2020-2021, Physics and Mathematics will be mandatory to pursue B.Tech and B.E degrees, the students with any optional subject will be eligible for the admission.

Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, Computer Science, Information Technology, Informatics Practice, Agriculture, Engineering Graphic and Business Studies are the optional subjects through which students can get admission in Engineering colleges of India. The letter has been sent to all the recognized engineering colleges regarding the same by AICTE.

In most of the engineering colleges, the students take admissions on the basis of JEE (Main) which is conducted by the National Testing Agency while some states have their own admission process for admission in engineering colleges.

An AICTE official says that “We are hoping that this year, this move will help students in those states but next year onwards the changed norms are also likely to reflect in JEE (Main).”

Currently, around 3,000 institutions offer 13.2 lakh undergraduate degrees in engineering and technology. If the courses like architecture, design, planning and town planning are included, then it will increase this number in doubles.
