  • Chandigarh, May 31- Infusing the World Health Organisation (WHO) theme, “Commit to Quit” on the “World No Tobacco Day” (May 31), in the fragile minds of tobacco addicts, Haryana Health Department and National Health Mission, Haryana today celebrated the Day by launching the “World No Tobacco Day 2021, Campaign”.
  • During the event organized digitally from Panchkula various speakers’ shared deep insights on the adverse effects of tobacco consumption on the health of the addict and the society at large. DGHS, Haryana, Dr. Veena Singh urged the addicts to take pledge to adhere to the theme “Commit to Quit”. While inaugurating the campaign, which aims at reaching out to the interiors of the state to ensure a tobacco-free state and to spread awareness about its ill-effects, Dr. Singh shared that in the present situation of COVID it is important to quit tobacco. Moreover, the Department has associated with celebrities, actor and singer, Sh. Kanwalpreet Singh, producer, Sh. Ojaswee Sharma and actor, Sh. Swatantra Bharat, who will help in promoting the campaign. A 2-minute video laying emphasis on quitting tobacco for a healthy body especially during COVID-19 was also played during the event.
  • In her address Dr. Veena Singh said the three words “Commit to Quit” are the essence of the day but are difficult to adhere to. She elaborated that the people who smoke regularly are immuno-compromised and should quit it. She shared that the state already has four Tobacco Cessation Centres (which help addicts quit tobacco) in Panchkula, Kurukshetra, Ambala and Gurugram and such Centres will soon be opened across the 22 districts in the state. Besides this, the state has carried out numerous awareness drives as well.
  • ADGHS, Haryana, Dr. V.K. Bansal said that tobacco is injurious to health as an addict is prone to developing cancer, stones, cardiac issues other than affecting them financially. Nodal Officer for State Mental Health and Tobacco Programme, Dr. M.P. Sharma gave a presentation wherein he elaborated on the ways to quit tobacco and on various techniques used to cope up with it. Subsequently a presentation was given by Joint Director Department of Higher Education, Haryana Dr. Anju Manocha, who pointed out the factors which introduces teenagers to tobacco, including peer pressure and suggested ways to handle it.
  • The event was attended by 200 participants, including doctors from districts across the state and students. It was organized by Tobacco Control Cell, Haryana in collaboration with Department of Higher Education, Rotary Chandigarh Midtown and Generations Savior Organisation. Dr Rita Kotwal State Nodal Officer, National Tobacco Control Programme organised the event with education Dept Haryana. Nodal Officer for Promotion of National Health Programmes, Dr. Rita Kalra and Dr. Gulshan from State Tobacco Control Programme hosted the event.
