Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department, Haryana, Sh Rajeev Arora today inaugurated the second phase of setting up ‘Jail Radios’ in the jails of all the districts across the State.
- Chandigarh, April 29: Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department, Haryana, Sh Rajeev Arora today inaugurated the second phase of setting up ‘Jail Radios’ in the jails of all the districts across the State. In the second phase today Sh. Rajeev Arora inaugurated four ‘Jail Radios’ set up inside the jail premises of four districts including Karnal, Hisar, Gurugram and Rohtak. The ‘Jail Radios’ have been started so as to improve and bring some positivity in the lives of the prisoners.
- Sh. Rajeev Arora inaugurated the ‘Jail Radios during a programme held through video conferencing here today. Speaking on the occasion he said that this attempt of setting up ‘Jail Radio’ is a major step towards bringing a positive reform for transforming jails into a reformatory home which is one of the unique initiatives taken by the State Government. He said that the through the ‘Jail Radio’ is an effort would be made to lessen the communication gap between the jail inmates so as to improve the creative and mental capacity of the prisoners. He said that the ‘Jail Radio’ programmes are completely focused on the activities of the jail and the inmates and would be presented by the inmates only.
- Sh. Rajeev Arora also lauded the Tinka-Tinka Foundation for taking this initiative of starting a ‘Jail Radio’. While appreciating the commendable work done by Director General Prisons, Sh. K. Selvaraj in the jails of Haryana, Sh. Rajeev Arora said that the credit for the virtual inauguration of the second phase of setting up ‘Jail Radios’ in the jails of four districts of today also goes to Sh. Selvaraj.
- Sh. Selvaraj would be retiring tomorrow. Sh. Arora hoped that Sh. Selvaraj’s guidance for prison reforms would continue even after his retirement. On this occasion, Sh. K. Selvaraj said that so far radio stations have been set up in the jails of seven districts in the state, in its third phase more stations would be started soon in five other jails. It is pertinent to mention here that in the month of January, the unique initiative of setting up ‘Jail Radio’ was started by Haryana’s Power, Jails Minister, Sh. Ranjit Singh from Panipat Jail. After this, ‘Jail Radios are also being run in Ambala and Faridabad. The inauguration of four ‘Jail Radios’ in the districts mentioned above was done today in the presence of Session Judges of the four districts and Dr. Vartika Nanda, Chairperson of the journalism department at Lady Shri Ram College and founder Tinka-Tinka Foundation and the superintendent of the four districts. Dr. Vartika Nanda said that a programme of one hour will be broadcast daily through these ‘Jail Radios’.
- The radio programme will focus entirely on prison activities and inmates would run these programmes. At present, there are about 18,000 prisoners in the jails of Haryana. The purpose of setting up a ‘Jail Radio’ is to bring a positive change in the lives of the inmates. Speakers have been installed outside the barracks. Radio jockeys will share their daily experiences and share motivational stories.
