PUNJAB GOVERNMENT ALWAYS STANDS WITH FAMILIES OF MARTYRS:  CHIEF MINISTER

DGP DINKAR GUPTA ASSURES EVERY POSSIBLE HELP FROM PUNJAB POLICE TO THE MARTYR’S FAMILY

CHANDIGARH, February 1:

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Monday, handed over a cheque of ₹1 crore as ex-gratia compensation to the family of slain Punjab Police Constable Jagmohan Singh, who had unfortunately got killed in the line-of-duty in Manuke Gill, Moga in June, 2020.

A 2011 batch Punjab Police Constable Jagmohan Singh, 46, a resident of village Manuke Gill in Moga, died after a criminal opened fire at the police team that reached Khosa Pando village of Moga in connection with a complaint of arson on June 8, 2020. Prior to joining the Punjab Police, Jagmohan had also served in the Indian Army.

Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, accompanied by Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Dinkar Gupta, handed over cheque of ₹1 crores to Sukhwinder Kaur, widow of Martyr Jagmohan Singh, at Punjab Civil Secretariat here today. The CM also promised a job to the son of the police martyr, who was also present today, as soon as he completed his 10+2 education.

Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh said that though no amount of money could compensate the loss, the Punjab government always stood with the families of martyrs.

Chief Minister said that the compensation amount was given by the HDFC Bank under the Special Insurance Cover of ₹1 crore for the Punjab Police Personnel in case they died in the line of duty. This amount is apart from the other benefits funds being given under government rules to the next of kin of martyr, he clarified.

DGP Gupta appreciated the HDFC Bank for the launch of the Scheme for Special Insurance Cover of ₹1 crore for line-of-duty deaths to compensate the family members of Punjab Police martyrs. It is pertinent to mention that the Special Insurance Cover of ₹1 crore for line-of-duty deaths was the initiative of the Punjab Police led by DGP Dinkar Gupta. It’s the only scheme of its kind in the country for the benefit of police personnel of the border State of Punjab which is faced with major national security challenges, including a continuous influx of weapons and drugs from across the border.

Under this scheme, HDFC had signed an MoU with the Punjab Police in May 2020 to provide free Special Insurance Cover of ₹1 crore for line-of-duty deaths (upto a maximum of 5 claims per year) for acts performed by Punjab Police personnel done (a) in apprehension of terrorist/militant and members of organized criminal gangs/ smugglers/drug suppliers (b) combating terrorist attacks (c) prevention of heinous/serious crime (d) in preventing loss of life and property (e) performing a search and rescue mission as in various kinds of natural and manmade disasters.
