Government Focuses on Sustainable Water Management
Chandigarh, July 22: Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has asked all government departments to increase the scientific and planned use of treated wastewater. The initiative aims to conserve freshwater resources and improve water management across the state.
The Chief Minister said treated water should be used wherever it is suitable. He encouraged its use in irrigation, industries, horticulture, landscaping, and other non-drinking purposes. According to him, reusing treated water is an important step toward meeting future water needs.
Departments Asked to Prepare Action Plans
During a review meeting with senior officials, Saini directed every department to prepare a clear action plan for the effective use of treated water. He also stressed the need for close coordination between departments, including urban development, irrigation, public health engineering, and local bodies.
He said a joint approach would help implement water reuse projects more efficiently across Haryana. Better planning, he added, will ensure that treated water reaches areas where it can be used effectively.
Reducing Pressure on Freshwater Resources
The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of protecting groundwater and other freshwater sources. He said greater use of treated wastewater can reduce pressure on these resources and improve long-term water security.
Saini also urged officials to use modern technology to monitor water quality. Regular testing, he said, is necessary to ensure that treated water remains safe for approved uses.
Expansion of Treatment Infrastructure
Officials informed the meeting that Haryana is expanding its sewage treatment infrastructure. The government is also increasing the capacity of existing treatment plants to meet rising demand.
The state plans to encourage industries, institutions, and other large water users to adopt treated water wherever possible. This move will reduce the use of drinking water for activities that do not require it.
Supporting Sustainable Development
The initiative forms part of Haryana’s broader plan to promote sustainable development and climate resilience. Experts believe that wider use of treated wastewater can help address water shortages, especially in fast-growing urban areas.
The Chief Minister said every department should treat wastewater as a valuable resource. He added that scientific planning and timely implementation will help Haryana achieve its long-term water conservation goals.
