Heatwave Grips India as Temperatures Cross 45°C in Multiple States

India continues to battle an intense heatwave as temperatures in several states crossed 45 degrees Celsius this week. Weather departments and climate experts have issued warnings across northern and central India, with many cities experiencing dangerously high temperatures and severe dry conditions.

Reports indicate that Indian cities dominated the global list of hottest urban locations over the past few days. States including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha have witnessed extreme heat conditions, affecting millions of people.

The India Meteorological Department has warned that the ongoing “Nautapa” period — traditionally considered the hottest phase of summer — may intensify heatwave conditions further in the coming days. Health authorities have advised citizens to avoid direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours and maintain hydration.

Hospitals in several cities reported a rise in heat-related illnesses, including dehydration, heat exhaustion, and sunstroke. Outdoor workers, daily wage laborers, elderly citizens, and children are considered particularly vulnerable during the ongoing weather conditions.

Climate experts attribute the severity of the heatwave to changing climate patterns, urban heat accumulation, and delayed rainfall activity. Environmental groups have raised concerns about increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events across South Asia.

Authorities in various states have started implementing precautionary measures, including public water stations, heat advisories, and adjustments to school schedules. Agricultural experts are also monitoring possible impacts on crops and water availability.

The heatwave has additionally increased electricity demand as cooling systems operate continuously across urban regions. Power departments in several states are on alert to manage increased energy consumption and avoid outages.

Meteorologists expect some areas to receive temporary relief through dust storms and localized rainfall later this week, though extreme temperatures are likely to continue in many regions through early June.
