India’s First Hydrogen Train Approved on Haryana Route

Haryana, June 2026: India is preparing to enter a new era of sustainable rail transportation with the approval of its first hydrogen-powered passenger train on the Jind–Sonipat railway route in Haryana. The project, spearheaded by Indian Railways, marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and adopt cleaner energy solutions in public transport.

Hydrogen-powered trains use fuel cells that combine hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity, producing only water vapor and heat as by-products. Unlike conventional diesel locomotives, these trains do not emit harmful greenhouse gases, making them an environmentally friendly alternative for rail operations.

The Jind–Sonipat section was selected as a pilot route due to its strategic importance and suitability for testing the new technology. Officials believe that the successful operation of the hydrogen train could pave the way for similar services on other non-electrified and semi-electrified railway routes across India.

Indian Railways has been working on the project as part of its broader goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions. The hydrogen train is expected to feature modern passenger amenities, improved energy efficiency, and lower operating emissions compared to traditional diesel-powered trains.

Experts view the initiative as a transformative step for India’s transportation sector. Besides reducing environmental impact, the project is also expected to encourage investments in hydrogen production, storage, and infrastructure, supporting the country’s emerging green hydrogen ecosystem.

If the pilot proves successful, India could join a select group of nations that have introduced hydrogen-powered rail services, strengthening its position in the global push toward sustainable and clean mobility solutions. The Haryana route is therefore being closely watched as a model for the future of eco-friendly rail travel in the country.
