Three Punjabi-origin youths have been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty in connection with an extortion-linked shooting and explosive attack on a residential property in Surrey, British Columbia. The case is being viewed as a significant development in Canada’s efforts to combat a growing wave of extortion-related crimes targeting members of the South Asian community.
The incident took place in the early hours of February 1, 2026, when gunshots were fired at a Surrey home and an explosive device was used outside the property. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the attack caused concern among residents and prompted an extensive police investigation.
Police officers who were conducting patrols as part of a special anti-extortion initiative responded quickly and arrested the suspects shortly after the attack. Investigators later linked the incident to an extortion scheme that had been under scrutiny by law enforcement agencies.
The accused, identified as Harjot Singh (21), Taranveer Singh (19), and Dayajeet Singh Billing (21), initially faced serious criminal charges. However, all three later entered guilty pleas to reduced offences in court.
Taranveer Singh received a five-year prison sentence for the reckless discharge of a firearm, while Dayajeet Singh Billing and Harjot Singh were sentenced to 27 months and 25 months in jail respectively for throwing an explosive substance.
Authorities have confirmed that the three men are foreign nationals, raising the possibility of deportation proceedings after they complete their prison terms. Canadian immigration officials are expected to review their cases once their sentences have been served.
Law enforcement officials say the convictions send a strong message that extortion-related violence will not be tolerated. The case represents one of the first successful prosecutions connected to the recent surge in extortion-linked incidents reported across parts of British Columbia.
As Canadian authorities continue to investigate organized criminal activities linked to extortion, community leaders have welcomed the court’s decision, hoping it will help restore confidence and improve public safety.
