Residents raise concerns as exposed garbage layers at Chandigarh landfill cause pollution and health risks

Chandigarh, Thursday: Residents living near the Dadu Majra Dumping Ground have raised concerns after fresh exposure of waste layers at the site led to foul smell, rising health worries, and environmental complaints, prompting calls for urgent action by civic authorities.

According to locals, uncovered garbage heaps became visible after recent handling and shifting of waste at the landfill, leading to increased stench and the presence of stray animals and insects in nearby residential areas. Several residents reported difficulty in daily movement and expressed concern over possible health risks, especially for children and elderly people.

The municipal authorities have acknowledged complaints and stated that routine maintenance and waste processing work is underway at the site. Officials said steps are being taken to control odor and manage waste more effectively, including covering exposed sections and improving segregation practices.

The Dadu Majra landfill has long been a focal point of environmental debate in Chandigarh, with repeated concerns over capacity, waste management practices, and impact on surrounding colonies. Environmental groups have previously urged the administration to adopt long-term scientific waste disposal solutions.

As complaints continue to rise, residents are expecting swift intervention to minimize the impact. The situation once again highlights the ongoing challenge of urban waste management and the need for sustainable reforms at major dumping sites.
