India could soon join an international initiative to protect the Strait of Hormuz, according to French diplomatic sources. The proposed effort aims to improve maritime security in the Gulf region as tensions continue to rise.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important shipping routes. Nearly 20% of global oil supplies pass through this narrow waterway between Iran and Oman. As a result, any disruption can affect energy prices and international trade.

French sources said India is likely to receive an invitation to join the initiative. Although no official announcement has been made, New Delhi is seen as a key partner. India imports a large share of its crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz. Consequently, stability in the region remains a major strategic interest for the country.
India has long supported peace and stability in the Gulf. At the same time, it has maintained balanced ties with important regional powers. Analysts believe India could contribute through naval cooperation, intelligence sharing, or logistical support if it decides to participate.
However, the Indian government has not yet commented publicly on the proposal. Officials are expected to assess the framework and potential role India may play before making a decision.
