The Haryana Government has taken a major step to strengthen its fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse by setting up 13 additional fast-track courts for cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The move aims to ensure quicker trials, reduce the backlog of pending cases, and deliver timely justice.
Drug-related offences have increased in recent years, leading to a large number of pending NDPS cases in courts. To address this issue, Haryana had earlier established special NDPS fast-track courts in districts such as Ambala, Hisar, Kaithal, Karnal, Kurukshetra, and Panipat. The state later expanded this initiative by notifying additional courts in other districts and planning further expansion.
These fast-track courts are dedicated exclusively to handling NDPS cases. Their primary objective is to speed up investigations and trials, ensuring that accused persons are prosecuted without unnecessary delays. Faster disposal of cases is expected to strengthen law enforcement efforts and act as a deterrent against drug trafficking networks.
The Haryana Government has also complemented this judicial initiative with other anti-drug measures, including improved forensic facilities, better coordination among enforcement agencies, and the creation of databases to track drug offenders. These efforts are part of the state’s broader goal of making Haryana a drug-free state.
Overall, the establishment of 13 more fast-track NDPS courts reflects Haryana’s commitment to tackling drug-related crimes through a stronger and more efficient justice system. It is expected to improve conviction rates, reduce case pendency, and enhance public confidence in the legal process.
