The Punjab government has initiated the process of securing a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for the famous Amritsari kulcha, a move aimed at protecting its authenticity and promoting the iconic Punjabi delicacy on national and international platforms. The initiative is being led by the state’s food processing and industry departments in collaboration with local culinary associations and experts.

Amritsari kulcha, known for its crispy exterior, soft stuffing, and traditional preparation in clay tandoors, has become one of Punjab’s most recognized food items. The dish attracts thousands of tourists to Amritsar every year and has gained popularity across India and abroad. However, with many establishments outside Punjab using the “Amritsari kulcha” name, concerns have been raised about preserving its originality and cultural heritage.

A GI tag would provide legal recognition that the product originates from a specific geographical region and possesses unique qualities linked to that location. Once granted, only authorized producers and vendors from the designated area would be able to market their product under the “Amritsari kulcha” name. This is expected to boost local businesses, create employment opportunities, and strengthen food tourism in Amritsar.

Officials believe that obtaining the GI tag will place Amritsari kulcha alongside other renowned Indian products that enjoy geographical protection. The move is also expected to enhance export opportunities and increase global awareness of Punjab’s rich culinary traditions.

Local kulcha makers and restaurant owners have welcomed the initiative, describing it as an important step toward preserving the authenticity of the dish while ensuring economic benefits for traditional artisans and food entrepreneurs. The application process is currently underway, and authorities are optimistic about securing the prestigious recognition in the coming months.
