Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday accused the Badal family of exploiting religion for political gains, triggering a fresh political confrontation between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
Addressing a public gathering, Mann alleged that the Akali leadership had repeatedly used religious sentiments to strengthen its political position in Punjab. He claimed that instead of focusing on the welfare of people, certain leaders had attempted to blend religion and politics for electoral benefits.
The Chief Minister said Punjab’s people have become more aware and can now distinguish between genuine religious service and political agendas. He asserted that voters are no longer willing to support leaders who use faith as a tool to gain power.
Mann Targets Previous Akali Governments
Mann also criticized previous Akali Dal governments, alleging that they failed to adequately address issues concerning farmers, employment, education, and youth welfare. He claimed that political interests often received more attention than development-related priorities.
According to Mann, the current Punjab government is focused on transparent governance and public welfare. He said his administration remains committed to delivering services and development rather than engaging in divisive politics.
Akali Dal Rejects Allegations
The Shiromani Akali Dal strongly rejected the Chief Minister’s remarks and accused the AAP government of attempting to divert attention from governance-related issues. Party leaders maintained that the Akali Dal has consistently worked for the protection of Sikh interests and religious institutions.
Akali leaders further alleged that the Punjab government was trying to create unnecessary political controversy instead of addressing challenges faced by the state.
Political Tussle Intensifies
The latest exchange has added to the growing political rivalry between AAP and the Akali Dal. The two parties have frequently clashed over governance, religious matters, and state policies in recent months.
Political observers believe the war of words is likely to continue as both parties seek to strengthen their support base ahead of future electoral contests in Punjab.
