Chandigarh, June 26: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday launched a fresh attack on the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), calling it a “nanad-bharjai party.” He said the party’s political influence has declined significantly over the years. His remarks have once again intensified the political rivalry between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Akali Dal.
During a public event, Mann said the Shiromani Akali Dal was once among Punjab’s strongest political parties. However, he claimed it has now become a family-centric organisation. He also said the party has only a few elected representatives left and is losing touch with the people.
Mann’s “nanad-bharjai party” remark was widely seen as a reference to the close family ties within the Akali Dal leadership. He argued that Punjab’s voters are moving away from dynastic politics. Instead, he said people now prefer governments that focus on development, quality education, healthcare, employment, and public welfare.
Meanwhile, political activity has started to increase ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The Aam Aadmi Party has continued to highlight its governance record. At the same time, it has stepped up its criticism of opposition parties over their past performance.
However, the Shiromani Akali Dal strongly objected to the Chief Minister’s comments. Party leaders accused Mann of making personal attacks instead of discussing issues affecting the public. They said the Akali Dal has served Punjab for decades and has worked for farmers, religious institutions, and the Sikh community. They also expressed confidence that the party would regain public support.
Political analysts believe the exchange marks the beginning of a more aggressive election campaign. They expect major political parties to sharpen their strategies and increase public outreach as the Assembly election draws closer.
Overall, the latest political sparring has once again shifted attention to Punjab’s changing political landscape. In the coming months, debates over leadership, governance, and party organisation are expected to dominate political discussions across the state.
