The Muktsar illegal rehab centres case has exposed serious violations in the operation of unlicensed drug rehabilitation facilities. In a joint operation, the Health Department, civil administration and Punjab Police rescued around 60 inmates, including minors, from two illegal rehab centres near Malout town and Kattianwali village in Muktsar district. Authorities shifted the rescued individuals to government hospitals for medical care.

Joint Operation Uncovers Illegal Centres

Officials carried out coordinated raids after receiving information about the illegal facilities.

During the operation, authorities found that both centres were functioning without mandatory licences or proper medical approval. Police registered two FIRs and arrested one accused in connection with the case.

Inmates Found in Poor Living Conditions

The inspection revealed that inmates were staying in overcrowded halls under unhygienic conditions.

Moreover, officials found no trained medical staff, proper safety arrangements or basic healthcare facilities. Large religious symbols outside the buildings allegedly gave the impression that the centres were religious institutions.

Victims Paid for Unlicensed Treatment

According to officials, many inmates had stayed at the centres for two to three months.

However, they reportedly paid nearly ₹5,000 per month despite receiving treatment at facilities operating illegally. Dr Sunil Bansal, Chief Medical Officer of Muktsar, confirmed that both centres lacked the required licences.

Administration Intensifies Crackdown

Authorities have launched further investigations to identify others involved in running the illegal centres.

Meanwhile, officials are examining records and questioning those connected with the facilities. More action may follow if investigators uncover additional violations.

Government Stresses Safe Rehabilitation

Punjab authorities have urged families to verify whether rehabilitation centres are officially licensed before admitting patients.

Overall, the operation highlights the government’s efforts to crack down on illegal rehab centres and ensure that people struggling with addiction receive safe and regulated treatment.
