Mohali Dairy Farmer Builds Thriving 300-Animal Enterprise

The Mohali dairy farmer success story highlights how scientific livestock management and smart business decisions can transform traditional farming. Fateh Singh, a dairy farmer from Chhat village in SAS Nagar (Mohali), expanded his small dairy unit into a thriving enterprise with nearly 300 animals through selective breeding, direct milk sales and value-added dairy products.

Small Dairy Unit Grew into a Large Enterprise

Fateh Singh began his dairy farming journey in 2016 with just 50 animals, including buffaloes and cattle.

Initially, he sold milk through middlemen. However, he decided to supply milk directly to customers in Zirakpur and Panchkula in 2020. This decision increased his profits and helped him build a loyal customer base.

Scientific Breeding Improved Milk Production

With guidance from experts at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Fateh Singh adopted selective breeding techniques to improve the quality of his herd.

Moreover, he maintained detailed breeding records and focused on preventing inbreeding. These scientific practices improved milk yield, animal health and overall productivity. By 2021, his farm had expanded to around 300 animals.

Value-Added Dairy Products Boost Income

Instead of relying only on milk sales, Fateh Singh diversified his business by launching Samar Sweet and Bakery Shop in 2021.

The unit now produces paneer, khoa, curd, lassi, desi ghee and traditional sweets. As a result, the farm earns income from multiple sources while strengthening its presence in the local market.

Daily Production Touches 10 Quintals

Currently, the farm produces around 10 quintals of milk every day.

About half of the milk goes into value-added dairy products, while the remaining quantity is sold directly as fresh milk. Meanwhile, experts have recognised the farm as a model for scientific dairy management and genetic improvement.

Recognition Inspires Other Dairy Farmers

Fateh Singh has received the Chief Minister’s Award at the Kisan Mela organised by Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University.

Overall, his journey demonstrates how scientific farming, direct marketing and product diversification can help dairy farmers build sustainable and profitable enterprises.
