Centre Introduces New Child Health Programme
The Centre has launched Samagra Shishu Bal Swasthya Karyakram to improve healthcare for newborns and young children. Union Health Minister JP Nadda unveiled the programme during the meeting of the Central Council of Health and Family Welfare. The initiative aims to provide better home-based healthcare for children from birth to 36 months. Moreover, it focuses on early identification of health risks and timely medical support.
High-Risk Children Will Receive Extra Care
Under the new programme, frontline health workers will closely monitor newborns and young children who face higher health risks. They will conduct additional home visits to track each child’s growth and overall health. Furthermore, they will guide parents on nutrition, breastfeeding, vaccination and hygiene. As a result, families will receive timely support during the most critical years of a child’s development.
Centre Merges Existing Healthcare Schemes
The government has combined the Home-Based Newborn Care (HBNC) and Home-Based Care for Young Child (HBYC) programmes into a single framework. This integrated approach will ensure uninterrupted healthcare from birth until the age of three. Consequently, health workers can provide continuous monitoring without gaps in service delivery.
Programme Focuses on Early Childhood Development
The new initiative also aims to reduce infant mortality and improve child nutrition across the country. Health workers will identify health complications at an early stage and refer children for medical treatment whenever necessary. Meanwhile, the programme will encourage regular health check-ups and improve awareness among parents. Therefore, officials expect better health outcomes for children in both rural and urban areas.
Government Strengthens Public Health Services
The Centre believes the programme will strengthen India’s public healthcare system and improve access to essential child health services. Officials also expect the initiative to support healthier childhood development through continuous care and regular follow-up. Additionally, the government plans to expand awareness campaigns to ensure that more families benefit from the programme.
