The Kisan Mazdoor Morcha staged protests outside Power com offices across Punjab on Wednesday. They are upset with the Punjab government because it is not giving farmers electricity. This is a problem for farmers during the paddy cultivation season. The Kisan Mazdoor Morcha warned that it will launch a statewide ‘chakka jam’ if the power crisis is not fixed soon.
Many farmers gathered outside Power com offices in districts. They want electricity for their farms. They said that frequent power cuts are making it hard to irrigate their paddy fields. This is forcing them to use diesel-powered pumps, which’s very expensive.
Kisan Mazdoor Morcha leaders said that the state government has not kept its promises. Farmers are still facing power outages. This is a time for power cuts because farmers need to irrigate their fields regularly. Many villages are only getting a hours of electricity each day. This is not enough for farmers to transplant paddy.
Sarwan Singh Pander the convener of Kisan Mazdoor Morcha talked to the protesters. He criticized the government for not doing anything to fix the problem. He said that Kisan Mazdoor Morcha has been telling the government about this issue but nothing has changed. Many farmers in Punjab are affected by the power shortage. If it is not fixed it will affect crop production.
The protest was also about the detention of some farmers. They were trying to talk to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann about the power crisis during his in Moga. Farmer leaders said that this was not fair. They will keep protesting until the government listens to them.
The Kisan Mazdoor Morcha is warning the government that it will start a protest. They will organize a statewide ‘chakka jam’ if the government does not improve the electricity supply. They will block highways and roads. The Kisan Mazdoor Morcha will decide what to do after seeing how the government responds.
Now paddy transplantation is happening across Punjab. Farmers need electricity to irrigate their fields.
