A portion of the NH-152D overbridge near the Shambhu Barrier in Ambala has partially sunk after soil eroded from beneath an expansion joint, raising serious concerns over the safety of commuters using the busy national highway.
The affected section is located where the overbridge connects with the road surface. According to local reports, the soil beneath several concrete blocks has washed away, leaving parts of the structure unsupported. With the monsoon season continuing, residents and commuters fear the damage could worsen and increase the risk of a major accident.
NH-152D is a key highway connecting Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh, and is frequently used by heavy commercial vehicles as well as daily commuters. The damaged stretch is considered particularly sensitive due to the high volume of traffic passing through the area.
The incident has also raised questions about the durability and construction quality of the relatively new highway, which was built at a cost of several crore rupees. The exposed and unsupported sections near the bridge joint have sparked concerns over the structural integrity of the overbridge.
Adding to the risk, construction work by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is also underway near the affected location, prompting calls for immediate repairs and traffic safety measures.
Responding to the issue, NHAI Project Officer Aakriti Gupta confirmed that the matter has come to the authority’s notice. She said the original construction agency is no longer responsible for the project and that the work has since been assigned to another agency.
Gupta assured that a detailed inspection of the damaged portion would be carried out immediately and that repair work would begin at the earliest to ensure the safety of motorists and restore the affected section of the highway.
