Jagannath Snana Yatra is one of the most important festivals celebrated at the famous Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha. In 2026, the festival falls on 29 June. Observed on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Jyeshtha, the festival marks the ceremonial bathing of Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra. It is considered the first major ritual leading up to the world-renowned Rath Yatra.

On this auspicious day, the deities are brought out from the sanctum sanctorum and placed on a special bathing platform known as the Snana Mandap. Thousands of devotees gather to witness the grand ceremony. During the ritual, 108 pots of sacred water drawn from a special temple well are used to bathe the deities. Priests perform the bathing with Vedic chants and traditional rituals, creating a spiritually uplifting atmosphere.

According to tradition, the deities fall ill after the elaborate bathing ceremony. As a result, they are kept away from public view for about fifteen days in a period known as Anasara. During this time, temple priests offer special herbal treatments and care to the deities. Devotees eagerly await their reappearance, known as Netrotsava, before the commencement of the Rath Yatra.
