Public transport services across Punjab were disrupted on Tuesday as employees of PRTC and PUNBUS went on strike to press for their long-pending demands. The protest affected bus operations in several districts, causing inconvenience to thousands of passengers.
Many buses remained off the roads, leading to delays and cancellations on key routes. The disruption particularly affected students, office workers, and daily commuters who depend on state-run buses for affordable transportation.
The protesting employees are demanding the regularisation of contractual staff, fresh recruitment to fill vacant posts, and improvements in service conditions. Union leaders said workers have repeatedly raised these issues with the government but have not received a satisfactory response.
Employee representatives warned that the agitation could continue if their demands are not addressed at the earliest. They argued that staff shortages and job insecurity are affecting both employees and transport services.
Meanwhile, transport officials are monitoring the situation and making efforts to reduce inconvenience to passengers. Authorities have advised commuters to check service availability before travelling and make alternate arrangements where necessary.
The strike has once again highlighted the importance of Punjab’s public transport system, which serves thousands of passengers every day. With many people relying on government buses for work, education, and essential travel, prolonged disruptions could have a wider impact on daily life.
Talks between employee unions and the government are expected to continue in the coming days. Commuters and transport workers alike are hoping for an early resolution so that normal bus services can resume across the state.
