Chandigarh, June 11: In a city-wide enforcement drive, the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh on Tuesday seized 35 ice cream carts operating across various sectors for alleged violations of hygiene standards and lack of valid trade licences. The action was taken during routine inspections aimed at ensuring compliance with food safety norms during the peak summer season.
According to officials, the drive was conducted across busy marketplaces, parks, and roadside vending zones where a large number of informal vendors sell frozen desserts. The enforcement teams found that several carts were functioning without proper registration, while others were reportedly not maintaining basic cleanliness standards required under municipal regulations.
Officials further stated that some vendors were using unapproved storage methods for dairy products, raising concerns about food safety, especially in high temperatures. The seized carts were taken to designated municipal grounds, and notices have been issued to the vendors concerned. They have been asked to produce valid documentation and comply with licensing requirements before seeking the release of their carts.
A senior municipal officer said the drive was part of an ongoing effort to regulate street vending activities and protect public health. He added that similar inspections would continue in the coming days, particularly in high-footfall areas.
The action has sparked mixed reactions among vendors and residents, with some supporting the move for safety reasons while others have urged authorities to adopt a more balanced approach.
Authorities have indicated that strict compliance with hygiene and licensing rules will be enforced going forward to prevent such violations in the future.
