Waris Punjab De Protest Triggers Political Debate in Chandigarh
The Waris Punjab De protest in Chandigarh has sparked political discussion after a deceased Shiromani Akali Dal legislator was named in a police case linked to the demonstration.

Ayali Raises Concerns Over Sikh Prisoners

According to Ayali, the protesters gathered to highlight the issue and seek attention from the government. He said the continued imprisonment of Sikh political prisoners remained a serious concern for many members of the community.
Ayali also questioned how different cases were being handled. He compared the situation of Sikh political prisoners with that of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim.
The Akali Dal leader alleged that different standards were being applied. He said Ram Rahim had received parole or furlough on several occasions. At the same time, Sikh political prisoners continued to remain in jail.
Police Register Case Under BNS Sections
Police registered the case under Sections 121(1), 132 and 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Section 121(1) relates to voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant. The provision applies when such action is intended to prevent or deter an official from performing a public duty.
Section 132 concerns assault or criminal force used against a public servant. Section 223 relates to disobeying a lawful order issued by a public authority.
The police action has led to further discussion about the protest and the circumstances surrounding the case.
Waris Punjab De Spokesperson Responds
Meanwhile, Waris Punjab De spokesperson Rashpal Singh Sosan criticised the police action. He alleged that police personnel had instigated the protesters.
Sosan maintained that the participants had gathered peacefully. According to him, the demonstration aimed to raise concerns about Sikh political prisoners and their continued imprisonment.
The Waris Punjab De protest has again brought the issue into public discussion. It has also raised questions about the handling of demonstrations and the application of legal provisions.
