A former correctional officer of Indian origin in British Columbia, Canada, has received a two-year conditional sentence after admitting to a breach of trust involving an inmate. Authorities said the former jail guard developed an inappropriate relationship with a prisoner and failed to report that he possessed an illegal cellphone.
Court Finds Breach of Trust
The former officer, Ramandeep Rai, worked at the North Fraser Pretrial Centre in Port Coquitlam. According to court proceedings, Rai entered into a romantic relationship with an inmate instead of reporting the prison rule violations.
Prosecutors said the inmate used the cellphone while inside the correctional facility. Investigators later found that the device was also used to support drug-related activities within the prison. However, the court noted that Rai did not receive any financial benefit from the offence.
Conditional Sentence Instead of Jail
The court sentenced Rai to a two-year conditional sentence, which will be served in the community under strict conditions. She must follow a curfew, complete community service and comply with other court-imposed restrictions.
Her lawyer argued that she accepted responsibility for her actions and would face long-term consequences because of her criminal record and the loss of her career.
Officer Accepted Responsibility
During the hearing, Rai acknowledged that her actions were a serious mistake. She admitted that her conduct placed fellow correctional officers at risk and damaged public trust in the prison system.
Meanwhile, the court accepted that she was unaware the inmate allegedly used the cellphone to support drug trafficking activities.
Case Raises Concerns Over Prison Security
The case has renewed concerns about security inside correctional facilities and the importance of maintaining professional boundaries between prison staff and inmates.
Authorities believe strict oversight and enforcement are necessary to prevent similar breaches of trust in the future.
