Sirsa: Farmers in Haryana’s Sirsa district have urged the government to address long-pending issues related to the Ghaggar drainage system before the monsoon arrives. They fear that poor drainage infrastructure could cause flooding, waterlogging, and crop losses in several villages.
Farmers Seek Urgent Repairs
Farmers raised their concerns during an Akrosh Panchayat held at Nathusari Chopta under the banner of the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS).
They demanded immediate desilting of the Hisar-Ghaggar Multipurpose Drain. They also asked authorities to strengthen embankments and install high-capacity pumps in vulnerable areas.
Farmer leaders said these measures would help prevent flooding during heavy rainfall.
Concern Over Crop Damage
Farmers claim that drainage problems have affected the region for years. They say overflowing water often damages crops and agricultural land.
Many participants pointed to previous flooding incidents in Sirsa. They argued that the government must take preventive action instead of responding after damage occurs.
The approaching monsoon has increased concerns among residents and farmers across the Ghaggar belt.
Demand for Better Infrastructure
Farmer organisations have also demanded the construction of a gate near Ottu Head. They believe the project would improve water management and support faster drainage during periods of heavy rain.
The groups also want authorities to arrange temporary pumping systems before the monsoon season begins.
According to farmer representatives, these steps can reduce the risk of waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Protest Warning
Farmer leaders warned that they would intensify their agitation if officials fail to act on their demands.
During the panchayat, they announced a protest outside the office of Haryana’s Irrigation Minister on June 25. Earlier, farmers organised a tractor march to draw attention to the issue.
They later submitted a memorandum to irrigation department officials and sought immediate intervention.
Call for a Long-Term Solution
Farmers want a permanent solution to recurring drainage problems in the Ghaggar region. They have called for regular maintenance, stronger infrastructure, and timely government action.
They believe these measures will protect agricultural land and reduce losses during future monsoon seasons.
With rains expected soon, farmer groups say they will continue their campaign until authorities implement concrete measures on the ground.
