The Haryana Human Rights Commission (HHRC) has ordered an independent probe into allegations of custodial torture by the Sohna Crime Branch police in Gurugram. An Inspector General of Police (IGP)-rank officer will lead the investigation to ensure fairness and transparency.
The commission acted after receiving a complaint about the alleged treatment of a person in police custody. It said the seriousness of the allegations requires an impartial inquiry. Therefore, it directed a senior police officer to examine the matter independently.
The HHRC also made it clear that police custody does not give officials the right to use torture or inhuman treatment. Instead, it stressed that every person has the right to dignity and legal protection, regardless of the charges against them.
Moreover, the commission said an independent investigation is necessary to maintain public trust in the justice system. It added that following legal procedures and protecting human rights should remain a priority for every law enforcement agency.
The commission has asked the IGP-rank officer to submit a detailed report after completing the inquiry. It will review the findings before deciding whether any further action is required.
Meanwhile, the case has drawn attention to the issue of custodial violence and police accountability in Haryana. The commission believes that a transparent investigation will help establish the facts and strengthen confidence in the rule of law.
