The India Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave alert for Chandigarh, warning residents of a sharp rise in temperatures over the coming days. The advisory comes as the Union Territory continues to experience intense summer conditions, with mercury levels expected to remain significantly above normal.
According to officials, Chandigarh has been witnessing steadily increasing daytime temperatures, driven by dry winds and clear skies. The heatwave conditions are likely to intensify, particularly during peak afternoon hours, posing health risks to vulnerable groups including children, the elderly, and outdoor workers.
Authorities have urged residents to take necessary precautions, including avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours, staying hydrated, and limiting outdoor activity where possible. Hospitals and health departments have also been advised to remain prepared for heat-related illnesses such as dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.
Schools, municipal bodies, and labour departments are expected to circulate advisories to ensure safety measures are followed in public spaces and workplaces. Water availability and cooling arrangements are also being monitored in densely populated areas of the city.
Meteorological experts note that such heatwave spells are becoming increasingly frequent during early summer months in the region, reflecting broader climatic patterns. While short-term relief is not immediately expected, a slight change in weather conditions may occur if wind patterns shift in the coming days.
The administration continues to monitor the situation closely and has appealed to citizens to remain cautious and follow official advisories. As Chandigarh braces for continued high temperatures, preparedness and public awareness remain key to reducing heat-related risks across the city.
