The Himachal Pradesh Department of Prisons and Correctional Services has launched a new rehabilitation programme called “Akshar Se Atmabodh.” The initiative aims to bring positive change among prison inmates through reading and self-learning.
Under the programme, prisoners receive educational and motivational books. Officials believe that reading can improve thinking, behaviour, and overall outlook towards life. The initiative also supports the government’s focus on reformative justice and prisoner rehabilitation.
Programme Begins in Kanda and Solan Jails
The programme first started at the Model Central Jail in Kanda. Later, authorities introduced it at the District Jail in Solan. Now, the department plans to expand the initiative to other prisons across Himachal Pradesh.
According to prison officials, the programme encourages inmates to spend their time in a productive and meaningful way. At the same time, it helps them develop positive habits and self-discipline.
Reading and Writing Activities for Inmates
As part of the initiative, inmates are provided with inspirational books, biographies, motivational literature, and personality development material. After reading a book, prisoners must write a short summary about what they learned from it.
Prison authorities then review these summaries to assess participation and understanding. In this way, officials can monitor the inmates’ progress and interest in the programme.
Moreover, officials believe that reading helps reduce stress and improves mental well-being. It can also encourage prisoners to think positively and prepare for a better future.
Sentence Remission Benefits
The programme also offers incentives for good participation. Inmates who actively take part and perform well may receive sentence remission benefits under prison rules.
Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services Abhishek Trivedi said the initiative aims to help prisoners reflect on their actions and rebuild their lives after release.
Focus on Reformative Justice
The “Akshar Se Atmabodh” programme has received appreciation as an innovative step towards prisoner welfare and social reintegration. Himachal Pradesh prisons already run skill-development and vocational training programmes. Therefore, officials believe this reading initiative will further strengthen rehabilitation efforts in the state.
Authorities hope the programme will help inmates return to society as responsible and informed citizens.
