Homemaker’s work cannot be measured by minimum wages alone: HC enhances accident compensation by Rs 14.79 lakh
The Punjab and Haryana High Court made a decision about accident compensation
. They said that the work a homemaker does is worth a lot more than
the minimum wage. The court thinks that homemakers do an important job taking care of their homes and families. They do not just do the work they do much more than that.
This decision came when the court was hearing a case about a woman who died in a road accident in 2022. She was from Karnal. Was 55 years old. She took care of her home. Also did some tailoring and had a small dairy business. Her family said she made ₹40,000 per month. There was no proof of this.
The High Court looked at all the work she did at home. The other things she did to help her family. They decided that her monthly income should be considered as ₹15,000. They did not just use the wage to decide this. The court also thought about her future and the other expenses her family had because of her death.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court increased the compensation for the womans family by ₹14.79 lakh. This is an increase from what they were given before. The courts decision shows that they think the work homemakers do is very valuable. The court wants to make sure that homemakers get compensation when something like this happens. The Punjab and Haryana High Court decision is a step forward for homemakers like the woman, from Karnal.
