India is witnessing a dangerous rise in heat-related illnesses as temperatures continue to soar across several northern and central states. Hospitals in cities like Bhopal, Delhi, Jaipur, and Chandigarh are reporting a sharp increase in dehydration, heat exhaustion, blood pressure complications, and heatstroke cases. AIIMS Bhopal recently recorded more than 140 heat-related emergency cases in a single day, with working professionals and outdoor labourers among the worst affected.
Doctors say prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures can severely impact the heart, kidneys, and nervous system. According to medical experts, dehydration reduces blood volume, forcing the heart to work harder and increasing risks for people already suffering from hypertension or cardiac conditions.
The Health Ministry has already issued advisories to states to operationalise heatstroke management units, stock ORS supplies, and strengthen emergency healthcare readiness during the ongoing summer season.
Experts are also warning that climate change is turning heatwaves into long-term public health emergencies rather than seasonal weather events. Citizens are being advised to avoid direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, drink adequate fluids, wear light clothing, and immediately seek medical attention in case of dizziness, confusion, rapid heartbeat, or fainting.
