An Indian worker was among four people killed after Ukraine launched one of its biggest drone attacks on Russia since the war began, highlighting the growing intensity of the ongoing conflict between the two countries.
According to Russian authorities, hundreds of Ukrainian drones targeted multiple regions across Russia, including areas near Moscow. Air defence systems reportedly intercepted a large number of the drones, but several still managed to hit civilian and industrial locations, causing deaths, injuries and major disruption.
The Indian Embassy in Russia confirmed that one Indian national lost his life in the attack, while three other Indian workers were injured. Embassy officials visited the affected area and met the injured individuals receiving treatment at local hospitals. However, the identities of the victims have not yet been officially released.
Russian officials described the assault as one of the largest Ukrainian drone offensives in recent months. Reports suggest that nearly 600 drones targeted more than a dozen Russian regions overnight, including Moscow and border areas near Ukraine. Authorities claimed that over 500 drones were intercepted or destroyed by Russian defence systems.
At least three people reportedly died in the Moscow region, while another fatality occurred in Belgorod, an area close to the Ukrainian border. Several others sustained injuries, and flight operations at Moscow airports were temporarily disrupted due to the aerial threat.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged the strikes and described them as a response to continued Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly argued that long-range drone operations are intended to weaken Russia’s military and energy infrastructure.
The latest escalation comes amid intensifying drone warfare between Russia and Ukraine. In recent months, both sides have increasingly relied on long-range drone attacks targeting oil facilities, military bases and infrastructure far from the frontlines. Security analysts say the conflict is gradually expanding deeper into Russian territory, increasing risks for civilians and foreign workers living in affected regions.
The incident has also raised concerns among Indian citizens working abroad in conflict-prone areas. India’s diplomatic mission in Russia said it is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating support for the injured workers and the deceased worker’s family.
As drone attacks continue to intensify on both sides, fears are growing that the Russia-Ukraine conflict may enter an even more dangerous and unpredictable phase in the coming months.
