Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia has approached a court seeking anticipatory bail amid apprehensions of possible arrest in connection with an ongoing legal matter. The bail application was filed before the competent court on Tuesday, with Majithia’s legal team requesting protection from arrest while investigations continue.
According to sources familiar with the proceedings, the senior Akali leader argued that he has been cooperating with authorities and that custodial interrogation is not required at this stage. His counsel reportedly submitted that the case has political overtones and sought relief to ensure that his rights are protected during the course of the investigation.
The prosecution, on the other hand, is expected to oppose the plea, maintaining that the investigation is ongoing and that all legal options remain open to the investigating agencies. The court has taken note of the application and is expected to hear arguments from both sides before passing an order.
Majithia, a prominent face of Punjab politics, has remained at the centre of several high-profile legal and political controversies over the years. His latest move comes amid heightened political activity in the state, drawing attention from both supporters and opponents.
The anticipatory bail plea is aimed at securing protection against arrest until the matter is heard in detail by the court. Legal experts note that such relief, if granted, does not amount to a clean chit but provides temporary protection while the judicial process continues.
The court’s decision on the plea is now awaited, and the outcome could have significant legal and political implications in the coming days.
