A potentially serious sacrilege-related incident was reportedly averted at a gurdwara in Dharmkot, Moga district, after a young man allegedly broke a glass panel and entered the Sukh Aasan Asthan before being apprehended by alert villagers and handed over to police.
According to local sources, the incident occurred when the individual allegedly gained access to the gurdwara premises and broke a glass barrier leading to the Sukh Aasan Asthan, the designated resting place where the Guru Granth Sahib is respectfully placed after daily religious ceremonies. The area holds immense religious significance in Sikhism, and any unauthorized intrusion is treated with utmost seriousness by devotees.
Villagers, members of the gurdwara management committee, and worshippers present at the site reportedly acted swiftly after noticing the intrusion. They restrained the individual before any further damage or alleged act of sacrilege could occur and subsequently informed the police.
Police officials who arrived at the scene took the accused into custody and began an investigation. Preliminary reports indicate that zarda and tobacco products were allegedly recovered from the individual. The presence of tobacco within or near Sikh religious premises is considered highly sensitive, as tobacco consumption and possession are strictly prohibited under Sikh religious principles.
Representatives of the gurdwara management committee expressed concern over the incident and praised local residents for their vigilance. Sikh community leaders called for a thorough investigation while urging people to maintain peace and allow authorities to establish the facts.
Punjab Police officials stated that the motive behind the alleged intrusion remains under investigation. Authorities are examining the accused’s background, mental condition, and whether he was under the influence of any substance at the time of the incident. An FIR is expected to be registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and other applicable laws.
The incident has revived concerns over the security of religious institutions in Punjab. Community leaders and legal experts emphasized the need for vigilance, proper security measures, and due process as investigators work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the case.
