A tourist from Chandigarh has been fined ₹20,000 in Manali after allegedly driving a vehicle into a restricted area, with authorities initiating action after a video of the incident went viral on social media.
According to officials, the incident occurred in a prohibited zone near a sensitive tourist location in the Manali region, where vehicular movement is restricted due to environmental concerns and public safety regulations. Authorities said the matter came to light after a video showing the vehicle inside the restricted area was widely circulated across social media platforms, drawing criticism from local residents and environmental groups.
Following the circulation of the footage, Kullu Police and local administration officials reviewed the video and verified the vehicle’s registration details. Investigators subsequently identified the owner as a tourist from Chandigarh and initiated legal proceedings. Officials confirmed that a challan of ₹20,000 was issued under relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and local administrative regulations governing restricted and environmentally sensitive areas.
Police officials stated that restricted zones in and around Manali are designated to protect fragile ecosystems, manage tourist traffic, and ensure visitor safety. Authorities emphasized that unauthorized entry into such areas can damage natural habitats and create risks for both tourists and local communities.
The viral video sparked widespread discussion online, with many users supporting strict enforcement against violations of environmental and traffic regulations. Local residents and tourism stakeholders welcomed the action, arguing that responsible tourism is essential for preserving the region’s natural beauty.
Environmental experts noted that increasing tourist footfall in hill destinations has led authorities to strengthen monitoring and enforcement measures. Tourism analysts said that while Manali remains one of India’s most popular travel destinations, compliance with local rules is crucial for sustainable tourism development.
Officials said similar enforcement drives have been conducted in recent years against visitors violating traffic restrictions and environmental regulations. Authorities warned that further legal action could follow if additional violations connected to the incident are discovered during the ongoing review.
