In a major push towards planned urbanisation and regional development, the National Capital Region (NCR) is set to get four new greenfield cities, which will be known as ‘Namo Cities’. The announcement was made after a meeting of the National Capital Region Planning Board (NCRPB) chaired by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal.
The proposed cities will be developed under the Regional Plan 2041, a long-term blueprint aimed at promoting balanced growth across Delhi-NCR and reducing the increasing population and infrastructure pressure on Delhi. According to the plan, NCR’s urban population is expected to rise significantly in the coming decades, making the creation of new urban centres essential.
To support the project, the Centre has announced a ₹5,000 crore development fund. States including Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi will submit proposals for the new cities, and the final selection will be made through a competitive challenge-based process. One greenfield urban centre is expected to be developed in each participating NCR state.
The proposed Namo Cities are expected to feature modern infrastructure, smart urban planning, sustainable housing, high-speed road networks and rapid rail connectivity. The initiative is also expected to attract investment, create employment opportunities and support economic growth in emerging urban regions.
The meeting was attended by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and ministers from Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Officials believe the project will play a crucial role in shaping the future of NCR by encouraging decentralised development and creating new economic and residential hubs outside the already congested metropolitan areas.
