Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has acknowledged that fighting between Israel and Iran has temporarily ceased, offering a brief respite from the latest escalation that threatened to plunge West Asia into a wider regional conflict. However, he made it clear that Israel remains prepared to respond decisively to any future attacks from Tehran.
In a statement issued on Monday, Netanyahu said that the fighting had stopped after Israel had “hit the terror regime in Tehran.” He emphasized that the current pause in hostilities should not be interpreted as a permanent resolution, warning that Israel would retaliate with force if Iran resumes attacks.
The latest confrontation erupted after Israeli strikes in Lebanon triggered a response from Iran, which launched missiles toward Israeli territory. Israel subsequently carried out retaliatory attacks on Iranian military and strategic sites. The exchange marked the most serious direct confrontation between the two countries since an earlier ceasefire arrangement earlier this year.
Diplomatic efforts led by the United States played a significant role in de-escalating the situation. Reports indicate that U.S. President Donald Trump urged both sides to halt military action and pressed Netanyahu to avoid further escalation. Following these interventions, both Israel and Iran announced a temporary suspension of attacks, although neither side has ruled out future military action.
Despite the pause, tensions across the region remain high. Netanyahu stressed that Israel would continue operations against Iran-backed groups, particularly Hezbollah in Lebanon, and reiterated Israel’s right to self-defense. Iranian officials have also warned that any renewed Israeli action would be met with a stronger response.
Analysts caution that while the immediate crisis has eased, the fragile truce remains vulnerable. Continued hostilities involving regional proxy groups and unresolved political disputes could quickly reignite direct confrontation between Israel and Iran, keeping West Asia on edge.
