Senior party leader Kewal Singh Dhillon is set to become the new president of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Punjab in a significant political move that may lead to a change in the leadership of the party in Chandigarh.BJP senior leader Kewal Singh Dhillon is expected to become the president of the party’s Punjab wing, in a significant development that could reshape the leadership of the party in Chandigarh.
Party sources say the name of Dhillon has been cleared by the party’s leadership and soon an official announcement would be made. The move reflects a new organisational initiative by BJP in Punjab, where it is taking a new step to expand its presence.
Dhillon is a former MLA of Barnala and also a well known Congress face who has joined the BJP in 2022. Ever since, he has been tireless in consolidating the party’s outreach, especially among the rural areas and the Sikh electorate.
The expectation of his elevation has been seen as a political strategy before the expected Punjab assembly elections in 2027 as the party seeks to change its leadership with a more regional flavour.
The shift also coincides with the end of a crucial period of the party’s organisational growth in Punjab, where Sunil Jakhar is the incumbent president.
Though the confirmation awaits from the BJP’s Central leadership, political circles in Chandigarh are already abuzz with speculations of a new cricketing era in Punjab politics.
