A land dispute in Sallodin (Khatraye Kalan) village under Jhander Police Station in Amritsar Rural turned deadly on Monday when an exchange of gunfire between two groups allegedly resulted in the death of one person and left another seriously injured.
According to preliminary information, tensions had reportedly been simmering between the two sides over ownership and possession of agricultural land. The dispute escalated when members of both groups confronted each other in the village, leading to an exchange of gunfire. During the incident, Jarnail Singh sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene. A member of the opposing group suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a private hospital in Amritsar, where he remains under treatment.
Police officials said teams from Jhander Police Station reached the village soon after receiving information about the shooting. The area was secured, and investigators began collecting evidence from the scene. Senior officers confirmed that the circumstances surrounding the incident are being examined and statements from witnesses are being recorded.
Authorities are investigating whether licensed or illegal firearms were used in the confrontation. Forensic experts have reportedly collected spent cartridges and other material evidence for examination. Officials said a case is being registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act. Details regarding arrests or suspects have not yet been officially disclosed.
Village residents expressed concern over the violence, describing the incident as a tragic outcome of a long-running dispute. Family members of those involved have demanded a thorough and impartial investigation.
Land-related conflicts remain a recurring issue in parts of rural Punjab, where disagreements over ownership, boundaries, and cultivation rights occasionally lead to legal disputes and, in rare cases, violence. Legal experts and community leaders have stressed the importance of mediation and timely resolution of property disputes to prevent escalation.
Police officials said further investigation is underway to establish the sequence of events, identify all individuals involved, and determine responsibility. Additional action will be taken based on the evidence collected during the inquiry.
