Panjab University has initiated the process of procuring new signage carrying information in Punjabi as part of efforts to promote the regional language and improve accessibility for students, staff, and visitors. The move, announced this week, will see signboards installed at various locations across the university campus in Chandigarh.
University officials said the initiative aims to strengthen the visibility of Punjabi, one of the official languages of Punjab, while ensuring that important directions and information are easily understood by a wider section of people. The procurement process has been started through the appropriate administrative channels, and the new signage is expected to be installed in phases.
According to university sources, the project will cover key areas including academic departments, administrative blocks, libraries, hostels, and public facilities. Existing signboards in English and other languages may be updated or supplemented with Punjabi text to create a more inclusive environment. The initiative is also in line with broader efforts to preserve and promote linguistic heritage in educational institutions.
Faculty members and students have largely welcomed the development, noting that the use of Punjabi on campus reflects the cultural identity of the region. Several educational institutions in Punjab have in recent years taken similar steps to increase the use of Punjabi in official communication and public displays.
The university administration has indicated that the project will be implemented in accordance with prescribed standards to ensure uniformity and readability. Once completed, the new signage system is expected to enhance navigation across the campus while reinforcing the institution’s commitment to promoting regional language and culture.
The procurement process is currently underway, with further updates likely as the project progresses.
