One week after the recovery of a headless child’s body from the Bhakhra Canal, Patiala Police continue to face significant challenges in identifying the victim and determining the circumstances surrounding the death, officials said.
The body was discovered by local residents near a section of the canal, who alerted authorities after noticing the remains in the water. Police teams, forensic experts, and emergency personnel reached the scene and initiated an investigation. Due to the condition of the remains, investigators have encountered difficulties in establishing the child’s identity and tracing the victim’s origins.
Over the past week, police have conducted extensive forensic examinations and collected biological samples for DNA analysis. Investigators have also cross-checked missing children reports from Punjab and neighboring states while coordinating with multiple police departments to identify possible matches. Public appeals seeking information from citizens have also been issued.
Senior Patiala Police officials said the case remains a top priority. Investigators are examining available forensic evidence, clothing, and other materials recovered during the investigation. Officials acknowledged that the absence of immediate identification has complicated efforts to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the child’s death.
Police have not ruled out any line of inquiry. While investigators suspect criminal involvement, authorities have emphasized that the motive remains unknown and that conclusions will depend on forensic findings and evidence gathered during the investigation. Possibilities being examined include homicide and other criminal circumstances, although officials have cautioned against speculation.
The incident has generated concern among local residents and child rights advocates, who have called for swift identification of the victim and justice for those responsible. Community leaders have also urged authorities to strengthen measures for tracking missing children and enhancing public awareness.
Experts note that forensic science, DNA databases, and inter-agency cooperation often play a crucial role in solving cases involving unidentified victims. Legal experts and child protection organizations stressed the importance of a thorough investigation to ensure accountability.
Police said the next phase of the probe will focus on forensic results, missing-person leads, and intelligence inputs that may help identify the child and uncover the circumstances behind the case.
