Rohtak, June 11: A guest teacher from Haryana’s Rohtak district was suspended days after participating in a protest organized by the CJP (Campaign for Judicial Probity) at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, sparking a debate over the rights of government employees to take part in public demonstrations.
According to reports, the teacher attended the protest held on June 6, where participants raised concerns over alleged irregularities in examination and recruitment processes. The demonstration reportedly drew students, job aspirants, and activists from different parts of the country who demanded greater transparency and accountability in the system.
After photographs and videos of the teacher’s participation circulated on social media, the state education department took note of the matter and initiated an inquiry. Officials found that the teacher had allegedly participated in the protest without obtaining prior permission from the department, which was viewed as a violation of the service conduct rules applicable to government employees and contractual staff. Based on the findings of the preliminary inquiry, the teacher was placed under suspension.
The action has triggered mixed reactions. Supporters of the teacher argue that peaceful participation in a protest is part of an individual’s democratic right to freedom of expression and should not attract disciplinary action. They believe the suspension raises important questions about the extent to which government employees can engage in public issues as private citizens.
On the other hand, education department officials maintain that employees associated with government institutions are expected to adhere strictly to service regulations and codes of conduct. The incident has reignited discussions about balancing constitutional freedoms with professional responsibilities in public service.
