In the wake of a recent sacrilege attempt at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has announced plans to strengthen security arrangements at the revered shrine by recruiting additional Sikh ex-servicemen. The decision comes amid renewed concerns over the safety and sanctity of one of Sikhism’s holiest sites.
According to initial reports, the sacrilege attempt involved an individual allegedly trying to disturb the sanctum area, prompting immediate intervention by on-duty sewadars and security personnel. The accused was apprehended on the spot, and the situation was brought under control without any major damage. The incident, however, has raised serious questions about existing security protocols within the temple complex.
Following a review of the situation, SGPC officials stated that they will expand the current security framework by inducting more retired Sikh personnel from the armed forces. These ex-servicemen are expected to be deployed across key entry points and sensitive areas of the Golden Temple complex to enhance vigilance and response capability.
SGPC representatives explained that Sikh ex-servicemen are being preferred due to their discipline, familiarity with security procedures, and cultural understanding of religious sensitivities associated with the shrine. They emphasized that the move aims to complement, not replace, the existing security system already in place.
The SGPC also confirmed that coordination with Punjab Police and other security agencies will continue as part of a multi-layered security arrangement. Regular surveillance, checking systems, and crowd management protocols are also being reviewed to prevent any future security lapses.
Officials further stated that the initiative is intended to reassure devotees and maintain the sanctity and peaceful atmosphere of the Golden Temple, which witnesses a large daily footfall of pilgrims from across the world.
The matter has also prompted broader discussions on strengthening security infrastructure at religious sites in Punjab. SGPC authorities have assured that all necessary steps will be taken to ensure that such incidents do not recur, while maintaining the open and welcoming nature of the shrine.
The recruitment process for ex-servicemen is expected to begin soon, with further details to be announced in the coming days.
